Protein Expression

Proteins are the most diverse and versatile among the major classes of biological macromolecules essential for life. They provide structural support, drive metabolism, enable communication, mediate defense, and regulate countless biological processes. For these reasons, proteins are widely studied, mimicked, and exploited in research across many disciplines.

The Protein Expression Facility at BIIE offers comprehensive protein production support to Research Groups and Flagship Programs. It provides tailored services including construct design, expression in suitable hosts, purification and characterization. By combining technical expertise with standardized workflows, the facility ensures the delivery of reproducible, high-quality protein samples. Our goal is to enhance research efficiency enabling BIIE scientists to accelerate discovery, innovation, and translation of research into therapeutic applications.

Research Focus

Our work is focused on:

Designing expression strategies for producing antibodies, soluble antigens, and custom proteins including:

  • Selection of the most suitable expression host

  • Design of protein expression constructs

Expressing proteins through:

  • Testing expression conditions

  • Scale up and production

Purifying proteins using chromatography techniques such as:

  • IMAC (Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography)

  • Protein A/G Chromatography

  • Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEX)

  • Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC)

Characterizing protein–protein interactions and quality via:

  • Antibody-antigen affinity measurements by Biolayer Interferometry (BLI)

  • Protein purity and QC by SDS-PAGE

  • Functional quality control using diagnostic antibody panel binding
